SECURITY COUNCIL
Topic 1: Addressing the threat of autonomous weapons and artificial intelligence in warfare
Advancements in AI and autonomous weapons raise ethical and security concerns for modern warfare. This topic considers how unregulated technology could destabilize global peace and violate international humanitarian law. The Security Council must balance innovation with accountability and control.
Topic 2: The ICC Indictments of Omar al-Bashir and the Security Council’s Political Hesitation to Enforce Them
The topic concerns the International Criminal Court (ICC) indictment of Sudan's former President Omar alBashir, who was charged with serious crimes including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity for actions taken in Darfur starting in 2003. The ICC accused him of orchestrating a brutal campaign against specific ethnic groups involving murder, rape, and displacement. However, despite these charges, the UN Security Council has faced political divisions and reluctance to fully enforce these indictments, largely due to geopolitical interests and vetoes by powerful member states.
